Kaffaratul Yameen Explained for UK Muslims

Kaffarah for an oath is called Kaffaratul Yameen. It applies when a person knowingly breaks a sworn oath made in Allah’s name. The ruling is clear in Islamic law and differs from Kaffarah for breaking a fast.

Kaffaratul Yameen is required only when the oath was intentional and then broken deliberately. Casual speech, habits of wording, or unintentional statements do not require Kaffarah.

The primary way to fulfil Kaffaratul Yameen is to feed 10 poor people. In the UK, this is fulfilled by paying £50. Each person receives sufficient food for one day.

An alternative option is clothing 10 poor people. If neither feeding nor clothing is possible, the final option is fasting three days. These fasts do not need to be consecutive according to most scholars.

This Kaffarah is paid once per broken oath. If multiple separate oaths were broken, each oath requires its own Kaffarah. Accuracy matters.

Kaffaratul Yameen is not the same as Kaffarah for breaking a fast. The amount, purpose, and ruling are different. Mixing the two leads to incorrect payment.

Paying this Kaffarah removes the burden of a broken oath. It also provides real help to people in need.
