If you deliberately drank during a Ramadan fast, Kaffarah is required. The ruling depends on intent. Intentional drinking breaks the fast and triggers expiation. Accidental drinking does not.

Does Drinking During a Ramadan Fast Require Kaffarah

Does Drinking During a Ramadan Fast Require Kaffarah

Kaffarah applies when a person deliberately drinks during daylight hours of Ramadan without a valid Islamic excuse. Intent is the deciding factor. Scholars agree on this ruling based on established sources.

If you knowingly drank water or any other liquid while fasting, Kaffarah is required. The quantity does not matter. The act itself breaks the fast when done by choice.

Kaffarah for one deliberately broken fast requires feeding 60 poor people. In the UK, this is fulfilled by paying £300 per fast. Food is provided as meals or essential food items.

If you drank by accident, Kaffarah does not apply. Forgetting that you were fasting removes the penalty. In that case, you only need to make up the fast later.

Kaffarah also does not apply if drinking occurred due to illness, medical necessity, coercion, or genuine hardship. You may still need to make up the fast, depending on your situation.

Each intentionally broken fast must be counted separately. One day equals one Kaffarah. Two days require two Kaffarah payments. There is no combined or reduced rate.

Knowing the difference between deliberate and accidental drinking prevents error. It ensures your obligation is fulfilled correctly.

      FAQ's

FAQs that cover the most common questions about donating to this project

What is Kaffarah for breaking a fast?

Kaffarah is the required expiation when a Ramadan fast is deliberately broken without a valid excuse.

How much is Kaffarah in the UK?

The Kaffarah amount is £300 for each fast deliberately broken. This feeds 60 poor people.

Is fasting 60 days still required?

Fasting 60 consecutive days is the original ruling. Feeding 60 people applies if this is not possible.

Does Kaffarah apply to missed fasts?

No. Missed fasts due to valid reasons require making up the fast or paying Fidyah, not Kaffarah.

Do I pay Kaffarah for every fast broken?

Yes. Kaffarah must be paid separately for each fast that was intentionally broken.

      Can I pay Kaffarah online?

Yes. You can pay Kaffarah online in the UK through a trusted charity that distributes food to the poor.
